Aishwarya Rai is an Indian actress and former model. She is best known for being the Miss World in 1994 and as a leading actress in many Hindi films including Devdas.
Aishwarya Rai was born on November 1, 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka, India. Her father was a merchant navy officer. When she was four, her family shifted to Mumbai. When she was in the 9th grade, she started appearing in commercials. She was not only beautiful but also was good at her studies. After finishing school, she got through the entrance exam for a course in architecture. However, she quit her architecture course when she started getting lucrative modeling offers.
Aishwarya caught the attention of the public with her wet look in a Pepsi commercial. She soon had a busy modeling career. In 1991, at the age of 17, she entered the prestigious Ford Supermodel Contest on the suggestion of a friend. She went on to win the title as well as the Tulips Miss Super Vivacious prize at the contest. She was soon featured in the Vogue magazine.
In 1994, Aishwarya entered the Miss India contest and finished as a runner-up. However, she went on to win the Miss World pageant that year in Sun City, South Africa. She was also named Miss Catwalk and Miss Most Photogenic Face.
Aishwarya soon became so popular for her beauty that she was offered good film roles. In 1997, she made her film debut in Iruvar, a regional film directed by the renowned director Mani Ratnam. She next moved to the heart of Indian commercial cinema, Bollywood with the film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (1997). She won the India's Screen Best Female Debut award that year.
In 1998, Aishwarya played the dual role of Madhumitha and Vaishnavi in Jeans. She was winning more and more fans with each film of hers.
It was not long before Aishwarya was winning awards for her performance. In 2000, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam opposite Salman Khan. That year, she also acted in the hit musical Taal and became the spokesmodel for Longines watches.
In 2000, Aishwarya starred in Kandukondain Kandukondain, Mohabbatein, and as a rape victim in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai.
In 2002, Aishwarya starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the big-budget box office hit Devdas. The film had a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival and Aishwarya was on her way to be an international celebrity.
In 2003, Aishwarya became a part of the jury at Cannes.
In 2004, Aishwarya made her film debut in an international film when British director Gurinder Chadha cast her in the lead role in Bride and Prejudice, a Bollywood-influenced version of the classic novel, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
In 2006, Aishwarya was next seen in Mistress of Spices that was released in the UK. Her next successful film was Dhoom 2 with Abhishek Bachchan and Hritik Roshan.
In January 2007, her film Guru opposite Abhishek Bachchan and directed by Mani Ratnam premiered in Toronto.
On the personal front, Aishwarya dated film stars Salman Khan aand Vivek Oberoi. In January 2007, she got engaged to Abhishek Bachchan.
