Biography
Q'Orianka Waira Qoiana Kilcher was born on February11th, 1990 in Schweigmatt, Germany. When she was two years old she moved with her parents to Hawaii. Soon after her brother, Kainoa, was born her father and mother split up. Kilcher soon learned how to perform Hawaiian and West African dance and used her talent to earn money to help support her family. Kilcher is first cousins, once removed, with singer Jewel Kilcher.
Her mother later moved Q'Orianka and her brother to California where she became a street performer on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. When she was ten years old her sound equipment was stolen from the family van. The story caught pubic interest and made front page news in Los Angeles. Many feeling bad for the young girl donated new sound equipment; in addition she received an audition for the film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She ended up getting a role in the film as a background chorus member.
Shortly after, in 2002 she appeared on Star Search and came in second place. Even though she had little acting experience and training she was cast for the leading role of Pocahontas in the 2005 The New World. The film was released in December 2005 and had some good reviews and some unfavorable comments as well.
The New World received a great deal of public controversy due to Kilcher's love scenes with Colin Farrell, who was about twenty-nine years old at the time; Kilcher, on the other hand, was only fourteen at the time of the filming and admitted it was her first kiss. Many scenes were later deleted to avoid controversy and accusations of child pornography. It would have made sense to have not filmed them in the first place, it's not like we're talking "artistic" cinema here. The phrase body double comes to mind.
