Videos more videos Biography Tyra Lynne Banks was born on December 4, 1973 in Los Angeles, California. She was raised in Inglewood, California. She attended an all girls Catholic school, Immaculate Heart High School. She has said her childhood was difficult and that she was often teased for being so thin and unattractive. She left her freshman year at Loyola Marymount University to model for Elite. She was seventeen when signed with Elite. She had previously been rejected by other agencies. She started modeling to pay for college but embarked on a long journey into Supermodeldom that would last many years. She started modeling in Paris for Versace, Yves Saint Laurent and Dolce & Gabbana. She soon gained international acclaim and attention as a raising star in the world of modeling. She began posing for high profile magazines such as Gentlemen's Quarterly and Sport's Illustrated. She was the first African American model to do so at the time. She became a Victoria's Secret model in the 1990's and became known as one of their first "Angels." She has appeared in an amazing amount of fashion magazines and commercials since that time. In 2003 she began modeling less and taking the lead in moving into producing her own shows. She is the executive producer of America's Next Top Model and of her own talk show, The Tyra Banks Show. She is very outspoken about her body shape which has been deemed by some as voluptuous compared to the standard extreme thinness of others in her industry.
