Biography
Cindy Crawford is an American supermodel. She features in most of the lists for the sexiest and most beautiful women and was ranked number five on Playboy's list of the 100 Sexiest Stars of the 20th century.
Cynthia Ann Crawford was born on February 20, 1966 in De Kalb, Illinois. When Cindy was 10, her brother Jeffery Crawford died because of leukemia.
Cindy was an above average student and graduated from high school as valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. She also received an academic scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University. However, she quit college midway to pursue her modeling career.
At the age of 16 years, Cindy was discovered accidentally by a newspaper photographer. He clicked Cindy when she was at work during her summer job of pollinating corn. She spent her next two summers modeling with Elite Model Management, Chicago. Though she achieved moderate success in Chicago, her supermodel career took off when she moved to New York City in 1986. In just two years she was walking the ramp for the biggest fashion designers. In 1988, Cindy became the first modern supermodel to appear in Playboy.
Since her debut in the modeling world, Cindy has appeared on the covers of more than 600 magazines including Vogue, W, People, Harper's Bazaar, ELLE, Cosmopolitan, and Allure, and launched dozens of fashion campaigns. She has modeled for innumerable advertisement campaigns and is today among the most recognizable celebrities in the world. She has served as celebrity spokeswoman for Revlon, Pepsi, Omega watches, 24-Hour Fitness, Clairol Nice N' Easy, among numerous other products.
Apart from fashion and modeling, Cindy hosted MTV's House of Style from 1989 to 1995. She also pursued an acting career and co-starred with Billy Baldwin in her first movie Fair Game (1995). However, her acting abilities were severely criticized and she had only managed few minor roles since her debut.
Cindy is also an astute businesswoman and through her company, Crawdaddy Inc. has launched hugely successful beauty and fitness videos and swimsuit calendars. She also markets her own fragrances, including Cindy Crawford Joyful, Cindy Crawford Waterfalls, and Cindy Crawford Feminine and has a line of skin care products called Meaningful Beauty. She also has a stake in the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain.
Cindy married actor Richard Gere in December 1991. However, the couple separated in 1995. Later, she reportedly dated the basketball player Shaquille O'Neal and actor Val Kilmer before marrying Rande Gerber in May 1998. They have two children, Presley, born July 2, 1999, and Kaya, born September 3, 2001.
In a world of fashion and glamour where beauty is often related to one's age, Cindy has defied conventional wisdom by her staying power. Even after 20 years when she burst on the modeling and fashion scene her popularity has endured. That she ranked as #26 in the 2006 Hot 100 issue of Maxim magazine confirms this fact.
