Biography

Winona Ryder is a critically acclaimed American actress. In her 20 years long career, she has starred in numerous offbeat as well as commercial films and has to her credit several Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe Award.

Winona Laura Horowitz was born on October 29, 1971 in Olmsted County, Minnesota. She got her first name from Winona, a city close to her birthplace. Winona is third generation descendant of Jewish immigrants. Her parental grandparents were Russian, and her maternal grandparents were Romanians. Her mother Cindy Horowitz is an author and her father Michael Horowitz is an author and editor. Her siblings include a younger brother Yuri, an older half-brother Jubal, and an older half-sister Sunyata.

When she was seven, Winona's family moved to Rainbow, a commune near Elk, California. A remote area with no electricity or television sets, Winona spent time reading and watching films that her mother showed in a barn. Her inclination toward acting started from there. Her family next moved to Petaluma, California when Winona was 10. Within a year, Winona started taking her first acting lessons at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

Winona's first attempt at an acting role was for Desert Bloom in 1985. However, she was rejected. She got her debut when David Seltzer, a writer and director, noticed her and cast her for Lucas (1986) in the role of a friend of the main character. It was during this film that Winona assumed the last name Ryder for her screen credits.

She next starred in Square Dance (1987) and received a good response from the critics. However, the first movie, which established her acting credentials firmly in the industry, was Tim Burton's Beetlejuice (1988). In 1989, she starred in Heather, a role that is regarded as Winona's best. In 1990, she starred in Edwards Scissorhands with Johnny Depp, Mermaids with Cher, and Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael with Jeff Daniels.

In 1992, she appeared in Bram Stoker's Dracula. In 1993, she appeared in The Age of Innocence with Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis. She went ahead to win a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award nomination for her role in this film. In 1994, she won another Academy Award nomination for Little Women.

In 1996, she appeared in Looking for Richard, the debut of Al Pacino as a director. In 1997, she was seen as a humanoid robot in Alien: Resurrection. In 1999, she turned producer when she served as the executive producer for Girl, Interrupted. In 2000, she paired opposite Richard Gere in the romantic Autumn in New York.

In 2002, Ryder appeared in the romantic comedy Mr. Deeds with Adam Sandler. Winona was again seen, after a long time, in 2006 futuristic movie A Scanner Darkly.

Besides her acting career, Winona's personal life has also been constantly in news. In December 2001, Ryder was arrested for shoplifting designer clothes and accessories at Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills, California. She was sentenced to three years' probation, 480 hours of community service, $3,700 in fines, and $6,355 in restitution to Saks. She was also ordered to attend psychological and drug counseling sessions. She has also been in news for her long engagements with actor Johnny Depp, Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner, and actor Matt Damon (three years).

Winona is one of the few actors who have sheer beauty and acting brilliance in equal measures.
